 T H E   D E L T A   W O R K S  

The crown on this giant flood-control project is the barrier dam that stretches 1.75 miles across the three channels of the Easter Schelde.
The dam consists of several strings of gates and their massive supporting piers which, in normal weather, allow tidal seawater to ebb and flow in the eastern estuary, thus benefiting the fish and bird life and local fisheries.
During a severe storm however, such as the one in 1953 in which 1853 persons perished, the gates can be dropped to keep out the high water and storm surges thus preventing them from inundating the lowlands behind the barrier.  A recommend for anyone interested in water management engineering.

Included in the tour are : Storm Surge Barrier,  Delta Exposition,
                                     boat excursion, dolphin sanctuary,  aquaria,
                                     film presentation " Delta Finale " and water
                                     pavilion.

As travel time from Amsterdam to the Easter Schelde storm surge barrier is minimally 1 1/2 hours and the time it takes to see the various aspects of the project this tour falls into the category of day tours with a minimum of 7 hours.
